A Touch Of Green

If you have been wanting to add a twist to your basic daily makeup routine then today's post is perfect for you. I know I get tired of doing the same quick makeup routine every day and sometimes I need to try something different to keep myself from getting bored. I generally prefer to use a muted natural color palette for my daily routine (which usually consist of variations of brown, copper, and bronze), but today I wanted to add a tiny bit of color to brighten up my face. I decided the perfect color to add to my look would be the color green because it complements warm neutral tones and it is not too intense or overwhelming (as you can see below).

A Touch Of Green Daytime Natural Makeup Look

Since this is a daytime beauty look I opted to only use the color green in small doses. I applied my foundation and set it with powder as I usually do and then decided to focus on my eyes. I thought the green would look best used in that area only. I had purchased the NYX eyeshadow trio in Tropical/Yellow/Lime Green but had never used it. The day I bought it I was in a mood to experiment but when I got home I chickened out after staring at the colors. Once I opened up the package the colors intimidated me because they just seemed too intense and overpowering, so I ended up tossing it in my eyeshadow bin and forgetting about it until today.

I am glad that I decided to keep the NYX eyeshadow trio and did not give it away like I usually do because I was pleasantly surprised to find out how sheer the formulation is so that dialed down the intensity a lot. The formulation was so sheer that I had to layer it on wet just so it would show up in pictures. If you are into really intense and rich colors you would have to layer this eyeshadow a lot to get your desired effect, but in this instance, the trio worked perfectly for me because I wanted a more natural sheer wash of color across my lids. To amp up the shadow I lined my eyes with NYX eyeliner in 911 Emerald City. It helped to intensify the green color in the shadow.

A close up of the finished result. I love the hint of green around the eyes.

As you can see from the picture above the finished result is subtle and pretty. This look could work for the office as well since none of the colors used are too bold for an office environment. Plus, if you have brown or hazel eyes this color palette would complement your pretty little peepers perfectly. Green always enhances the natural beauty of brown.

A close up of my eye makeup. I used the yellow color on my upper part of my lid and in the inner corner of my eyes around the tear duct, the tropical color was used in the crease, and the lime green color was used on my lower lid.

Since the formulation was sheerer than it appeared in the packaging it was kind of tricky finding the right light to capture its beauty. I walked to different rooms playing with lighting so you may see some color variances in my skin tone in some of my pics. I don't see how beauty bloggers do it because that was the biggest hassle just trying to find the perfect light. I must have taken dozens of pictures trying to get it right.

A full view of the shadow applied across my lids.

Since this is a daytime look I opted to only line my top lid. Usually, when I play with color I tend to line all around the eye to make it pop but decided that would work best for an evening look instead of what I was trying to achieve today.

In this close up you can get an idea of how sheer the formulation was. I applied it wet and built up to three layers.

Since I wanted most of the attention focused on my eyes I made sure to keep the rest of the makeup simple to balance out my face which meant that I had to change the blush and lipstick that I normally wear. I didn't want a color clash so I traded in my pink blush for a more tawny hue (Iman blush in cinnamon) and I did away with my usual darker lipstick and chose a pink color that I achieved by combining two products (e.l.f lipstick in Runway Pink and e.l.f. Pout Perfector in Glow).

Overall I liked getting the chance to experiment with my normal routine and slowly but surely I'm getting over my addiction to burgundy/wine lipstick. It is always fun to try something new and especially when you like the finished result like I did. I will try to use the NYX eyeshadow trio more but since the formulation is so sheer I think I will only use it for a daytime look instead of using it for an evening look. I loved the NYX eyeliner in 911 Emerald City and will probably get a lot more use out of that since it is more of a richer jade color and works well for day and night.

  1. You look great! I like the stroke of green on your eyelids. It's always fun to do your makeup differently and experience with new colours or tones. My daily routine is pretty neutral but I do love bold lipstick, and maybe a smoky eye for date nights.

    1. Thank you! You are so right about getting stuck in a rut. I'm taking baby steps to get out of mine. I love a smoky eye but I have to get reacquainted with the technique because I haven't done a smokey eye in over a decade.

  2. At first glance I judged the green eyeshadow as well but it's actually quite neutral (and nice!) against your tone. Ha! I like the lip shade on you too!

    1. Yes it freaked me out too at first. It was just so greeeeeeeeeen, lol! It ended up being really sheer on my skin but it may be a little more intense if you have a lighter skin tone than mine.

  7. Girl you should wear green more often. Add it to the browns and coppers, it looks great on your skin tone. I go hard with makeup, have always loved it since I was a kid and watched my big cousins get all dolled up but green has never been my cup of tea. You also have really healthy skin LaToya, it totally shows through!

    1. Thank you! I have found an easy and basic routine with regards to my skin care so it has gotten better this year. I think I might add the green to my normal routine for day. I would love to go hard with my makeup but I need a little practice first. I don't want to end up looking like Mimi from the Drew Carey show. Lol!

  10. Okay, gorgeous! I love that green shadow, it looks so pretty on you and I love how you've added the coral with it, it makes for a nice transitional look from summer to fall. You should wear green more often, it looks so good on you! Also, you're such an incredible artist, do apply the inspo and boldness you do on your canvases on your own canvas, girl! I want to see more bold eyeshadow looks form you! Thanks for sharing and I hope you're having the best start to your week so far, beautiful!

    1. Thank you Jalisa! I used to wear green eye makeup a lot when I was in my early twenties but haven't tried it again until recently. When I was younger I did apply it a little more heavily but that was because I was going to the club so it worked for night time.
