It has been interesting to see how feminism and how fashion relates to it has changed over the years. The idea of feminism and being a feminist has evolved and has taken on so many different meanings and because of that it has left a lot of women confused over if they agree with the direction of the movement. For some being called a feminist has turned into a negative thing because they are under the impression that it means you are a man hater and see the opposite sex as the enemy. And for others they are conflicted by the narrow view of some feminists that if you enjoy fashion or wearing makeup you are oppressed and contribute to the patriarchal system. Unfortunately it has turned women against each other instead of us supporting each other and our right to make the choices that best suit our lifestyle. When people ask me if I am a feminist I always answer by saying I am a feminist in theory but do not always agree with the direction it has taken over the years. I'm in total agreement with the official definition of feminism which is, " advocating for the social, political, legal, and economic rights for women equal to those of men." To me that means just wanting to have the same basic rights and quality of life as men. To not be treated like a second class citizen or less than. I love men just as much as I love women and support the rights of both genders equally. I do not agree that if you like fashion and getting all gussied up that it means you are any less of a feminist than one who shuns it. " Clothes aren't going to change the world, the women who wear them will." That quote is by the late designer Anne Klein, and it totally sums up how I'm feeling. One day I hope we will finally get to the point when we realize that what a woman wears and how she dresses does not represent what she is capable of. That it is not about how you dress the package but what it contains. That what matters is our well earned accumulation of knowledge, experience, insight and how we as women relate to the world around us. We are pioneers, leaders, innovators, trend setters, nurturers, caretakers and somehow we manage to keep it all together and it doesn't matter if we are rocking heels or sneakers while doing it.
